ECF Out & About June 2026: Triangle of Hope Youth Pilgrimage

ECF’s Senior Director of Communications and Grant Writing, Kendall Martin, traveled to Liverpool, England, and Kumasi, Ghana, from May 9 to 18 as part of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia delegation ahead of this summer’s Triangle of Hope Youth Pilgrimage. The Triangle of Hope is a covenantal community among the dioceses of Liverpool, England, Kumasi, Ghana, and Virginia, USA, dedicated to transforming the long history, ongoing effects, and continuing presence of slavery in our world through repentance, reconciliation, and mission. Youth participants from the three countries prepare together through worship, prayer, study, and retreats, then travel as pilgrims to one of the three partner dioceses each summer for three consecutive summers.

Kendall joined her husband, the Rt. Rev. E. Mark Stevenson, Bishop of Virginia; the Rev. Dr. Canon Lee Hill, Canon to the Ordinary and Dean of Racial Justice and Healing Ministries; and the Rev. Susie Harding, Deacon, St. Andrew’s, Burke, for planning meetings with diocesan leadership in Liverpool and Kumasi, and for guided tours of landmarks central to the transatlantic slave trade in Ghana, including the Cape Coast slave dungeons and The Last Bath.

“This was a transformational experience that allowed me to meet many deeply committed Christians, learn about other cultures rich in their traditions, and gain insight into the generational trauma caused by the sin of chattel slavery,” said Kendall Martin. "My time in Liverpool and Ghana was truly amazing, and I can't wait to go back."

The Virginia delegation had the pleasure of meeting with the Rt. Rev. Ruth Worsley, Interim Anglican Bishop of Liverpool and Bishop of Wigan; the Very Rev. Simon Anderson, Anglican Bishop of Warrington; the Rev. Canon Malcom Rogers, Canon for Reconciliation in the Diocese of Liverpool and Vicar of St Gabriel’s Church, Huyton Quarry; the Rt. Rev. Oscar Christian Amoah, Bishop of Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana; the Rt. Rev. Dr. Victor Reginald Atta-Baffoe, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Cape Coast; the Most Rev. Dr. Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith, Primate and Metropolitan Archbishop of the Church of the Province of West Africa; and the Rev. Fr. Nana Akwasi Kessie, Rector of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Kumasi.
