A Stewardship Self-Examination for Lent
The season of Lent calls us into a period of prayerful self-examination. One area that invites our attention, is the high call of Christian stewardship. Bearing in mind our duty to give, and to foster healthy financial relations, we offer the following guiding questions for your reflection and confession.
- Do I acknowledge that all I have is gift from God and offer appropriate thanksgiving? In worship?
- Do I use my material wealth for God’s glory, to serve His people, to build His kingdom?
- Is my love of God and love of neighbor expressed through my relationship with money?
- Are faith and charity expressed in my financial dealings? Fairness?
- Do I trust in God’s provision, or have I been afraid about having enough?
As a further mediation tool, please look at our Good Friday scripture. Consider the gift of Nicodemus, who we are told “brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds,” to anoint Jesus’ body. Consider this excessive gift and how you too might unite your offering with Christ’s sacrifice. (See John 19:38-42)
