ECF Fellows News: Fall 2020
Dr. Sarah Barton (2018) started a new job at Duke University as Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy and Theological Ethics with a joint appointment in Duke's School of Medicine and the Divinity School. She is giving a free virtual seminar on October 30 with Duke Divinity School's Theology, Medicine, and Culture Initiative entitled "Spirituality and Disability in Patient Care: Where We Are Now and Hopes for the Future." There is continuing education credit available for clinicians. Finally, I was recently appointed to the editorial advisory board of The Journal of Disability & Religion as well as appointed to a four-year term on the American Academy of Religion's "Status of People with Disabilities in the Profession Committee."
Bruce Chilton (1974), Bernard Iddings Bell Professor of Philosophy and Religion, lectured at the Lanier Theological Library in Houston during February on the Toledoth Jesu (a collection of references to Jesus in the Talmud and associated literature). At the same time, he provided a podcast for the Library on his recent book, Resurrection Logic (Baylor University Press, 2019), as he did in February for The Christian Humanist. Critical print reviews appeared in The Bible Today, by Donald Senior, and in The Catholic Biblical Quarterly, by Glenn B. Sinischalchi. After the outbreak of the pandemic, he gave two lecture series for the Rhinebeck Reformed Church, one during the Easter season and one during Pentecost, which were disseminated by video links. The platform of the distribution of work has now been extended with a series now in process on Liberation Theology, supported by the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.
Stewart Clem (2017) recently wrote an article on the nature of patriotism that was published in The Conversation. He also wrote a few essays for Covenant, including “White Christian Fallacies” and a piece on the Ninth Commandment, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” At Aquinas Institute of Theology, during the fall semester he is teaching a graduate seminar on Justice & Catholic Social Thought, as well as an online course, Theology of Ministry, for students in the Master of Arts in Health Care Mission program. He continues to preach and lead worship at the Church of St. Michael & St. George (St. Louis, MO), which has adapted to the needs of the pandemic by offering a combination of online and in-person services. His current scholarly research includes projects on topics such as theology and the ethics of pain management, the morality of lying, and the intersection of religion and morality.
Dr. Elizabeth Kinkaid (2016), Assistant Professor of Ethics and Moral Theology at Nashotah House Theological Seminary, has recently published three articles - "Professional Ethics and the Recovery of Virtue", Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, Vol. 40, No. 1 (Spring/Summer 2020); "Christianity's Defense Against Tyrants", America Magazine (August 2020); "Economics and COVID-19", The Living Church (May 2020). She was also elected to serve as the Vice-President of the Board of Trustees of the Anglican Theological Review.
Kyle Oliver (2016) recently accepted a new position as communications and marketing manager and adjunct instructor in Christian education at CDSP. In addition, he has two new publications: Oliver, K. The Rev. Callie Swanlund (2019) continues to use her ECF Fellowship to help others Find Their Spark through her Wholehearted Wednesday movement on social media; leading virtual retreats, quiet days, and wellness webinars for churches and organizations; and companioning others through individual coaching sessions in Brené Brown's The Daring Way. Her formation resource How2charist: Digital Instructed Eucharist is also available for free and many churches have used it as adult education material via Zoom during this season.
James Turrell (2001) was recently named Dean of the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN.
Regina Walton (2005) was recently named Poetry Editor for the Anglican Theological Review. She continues in her ministries as pastor and rector of Grace Church, Newton MA and Denominational Counselor for Episcopal/Anglican students and lecturer at Harvard Divinity School.
